The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recognizes five primary types of skin: oily, dry, normal, combination, and sensitive. Each of these skin types has unique characteristics and needs that can affect the look and feel of your complexion.
HOW TO IDENTIFY MY SKIN TYPE
1. Cleanse Your Face:
Start with a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt, and oil. Pat your face dry without applying any products afterward.
2. Wait and Observe:
Allow your skin to settle for about an hour. This waiting period lets your skin return to its natural state, free from the immediate effects of any products or environmental factors.
3. Perform a Blotting Test:
Press a clean tissue or blotting paper gently on different areas of your face:
- If the paper picks up oil from most parts, you might have oily or acne-prone skin.
- If only the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) appears oily while the rest of your face is dry, you likely have combination skin.
- Minimal oil on the paper suggests normal or dry skin.
4. Assess Sensations and Appearance:
- Normal Skin: Feels balanced, not overly dry or oily, and looks smooth with few imperfections.
- Oily Skin: Appears shiny, especially in the T-zone, with enlarged pores and potential breakouts.
- Dry Skin: Feels tight or rough, may have flaky areas, and looks dull.
- Combination Skin: Shows oiliness in certain areas (like the T-zone) and dryness or normal texture elsewhere.
- Sensitive Skin: May react with redness, stinging, or irritation to various products or environmental factors.
5. Reflect on Reactions to Products:
Consider how your skin has reacted to previous products:
- Does it get irritated or break out easily? (Sensitive)
- Does it tend to shine or feel greasy by midday? (Oily/Acne-Prone)
- Does it feel dry and tight after cleansing? (Dry)
